An undersink cartridge filter with its own separate drinking tap is £220–£280 supplied and fitted. A three-in-one tap giving hot, cold and filtered water from a single spout is £400–£600 fitted depending on the tap chosen. A reverse osmosis system starts from £450.

How often do filter cartridges need changing?

Roughly every six months, at about £30–£40 per cartridge. It is a simple job most people can do themselves once shown, and I will show you on the day.

Will a drinking water filter stop limescale?

No. A drinking water filter only treats water at that one tap. It does nothing about limescale in your boiler, cylinder, shower or washing machine. If limescale is the problem you need a water softener, which treats the whole house.

Can you fit a filter tap to a granite or composite sink?

Yes, but it needs the right drilling equipment and care — granite and composite crack if rushed. I check deck space and undersink clearance first, and if drilling is not sensible I will say so and suggest an alternative.

What Filtering Does — and What It Doesn't

A good cartridge filter improves taste and smell considerably, removing chlorine and organic compounds, along with sediment and particulates. Reverse osmosis goes further and removes dissolved solids too.

Important: a filter tap will not stop limescale

This is the single biggest misunderstanding I come across. A drinking water filter treats the water at one tap only. It does nothing whatsoever about limescale in your boiler, hot water cylinder, shower, kettle or washing machine — because all of those are fed by unfiltered mains water.

If limescale is your actual problem, what you need is a water softener, which treats the whole house. Plenty of people fit a filter tap expecting it to fix their kettle and are disappointed. Best to know before you spend.

Before I fit anything, I check

Deck space. Is there room on the sink or worktop for an additional tap, and does the layout suit it?

The sink material. Drilling composite or granite needs the right equipment and a steady approach — rush it and it cracks. If drilling is not sensible, I will tell you and suggest a three-in-one tap instead.

Undersink clearance. Cartridge filters need room to swap the cartridge; reverse osmosis needs considerably more, including space for the tank. Worth checking before you buy a system that will not fit.
