What I Check on a Vaillant aroTHERM

The aroTHERM is a well-regarded unit, and the aroTHERM plus running on R290 propane is one of the better systems available for retrofit because it will produce higher flow temperatures efficiently. As always, most of what goes wrong is setup rather than equipment.

sensoCOMFORT controls and the heating curve

Vaillant's control system is capable but not self-explanatory, and the heating curve is frequently left at whatever the installer set on the day. Getting it matched to the property is where the running-cost saving lives.

R290 and the sealed circuit

aroTHERM plus units are factory sealed monoblocs. R290 is propane, a natural refrigerant and not an F-Gas, so different regulations apply. Routine servicing to the manufacturer’s schedule for these models does not normally involve opening the refrigerant circuit — refrigerant diagnosis or repair is separate work with its own scope and requirements.

System pressure and expansion vessel

The usual suspects, and worth stressing on Vaillant systems where repeated topping up quietly introduces oxygenated water, causing sludge that ends up in the plate heat exchanger.

Fan, defrost and noise

Defrost cycles are normal and sound alarming to owners the first winter. A genuine new noise is different — bearings, loose panels or perished anti-vibration mounts, all cheap to fix early and expensive to ignore.

Glycol and freeze protection

Checked properly on every visit. Weak concentration risks frozen external pipework, which matters on exposed installations around the Kent villages.

Warning Signs

Signs Worth Acting On

Very few heat pumps fail suddenly. They drift, quietly, and the bill is usually the first thing anyone notices.

Glycol never checked since installation

Not a symptom you will notice until pipework freezes. Worth testing annually on any exposed or rural installation.

Pressure dropping, needing top-ups

Points at an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Every top-up brings in oxygenated water, which becomes sludge, which blocks the plate heat exchanger.

Warm radiators but the house never gets there

Often the compensation curve set too shallow, so flow temperature never rises enough on genuinely cold days.

Short cycling on and off

The unit is producing more heat than the system can absorb — usually flow temperature too high or flow rate restricted. It wears the compressor and wastes electricity.

A new noise

Fan and defrost noise is normal. A new whine, rattle or vibration is not — bearings, a loose panel or a perished anti-vibration mount. Cheap early, expensive later.
