What I Check on an Ecodan
The Ecodan is one of the most common heat pumps in this part of Kent and South East London, and it is a genuinely good unit. Almost every complaint I get about one turns out to be commissioning rather than the equipment.
The FTC controller settings
This is where the money is. Ecodan systems run Auto Adaptation and weather compensation through the FTC, and I regularly find them disabled with a fixed flow temperature set at 50°C or higher — because it warms the house fast on handover day. The same property will usually run happily at 40–45°C and use noticeably less electricity.
System pressure and expansion vessel
Ecodan installations are sensitive to a poorly charged expansion vessel. Pressure swings, the relief valve passes, you top up, and every top-up introduces oxygenated water that causes sludge and eventually blocks the plate heat exchanger.
Glycol and freeze protection
Checked properly, not eyeballed. Weak concentration risks frozen external pipework in a hard winter, particularly on the more exposed rural installations around Sevenoaks and the Kent villages.
Strainer, pump and flow rate
A partially blocked strainer quietly starves the system of flow, which the Ecodan then compensates for by working harder. Cleaning it is routine and it is skipped constantly.
Cylinder coil and legionella cycle
On Ecodan systems paired with a cylinder I check the coil performance and that the legionella cycle is set sensibly — not so often it wastes electricity, not so rarely it becomes a safety issue.

Very few heat pumps fail suddenly. They drift, quietly, and the bill is usually the first thing anyone notices.
Fault codes appearing and clearing themselves
Intermittent codes are worth noting rather than dismissing. They usually precede a hard fault by weeks or months.
Short cycling on and off
The unit is producing more heat than the system can absorb — usually flow temperature too high or flow rate restricted. It wears the compressor and wastes electricity.
It runs constantly in mild weather
Should be modulating down, not running flat out in October. Usually a compensation curve issue or a controls setting.
Pressure dropping, needing top-ups
Points at an expansion vessel that has lost its charge. Every top-up brings in oxygenated water, which becomes sludge, which blocks the plate heat exchanger.
Ice that does not clear after a defrost
Defrost cycles look alarming the first winter and are normal. Ice that persists afterwards is not, and wants looking at before it causes damage.
