I live and work in Orpington, which matters more for heat pumps than people realise. Heat pump work is not always a single visit — optimising a system properly sometimes means coming back after a cold snap to see how the settings performed. That is straightforward when the engineer is five minutes away and impractical when he is not.

Very few heat pumps fail suddenly. They drift, quietly, and the bill is usually the first thing anyone notices.
Ice that does not clear after a defrost
Defrost cycles look alarming the first winter and are normal. Ice that persists afterwards is not, and wants looking at before it causes damage.
It runs constantly in mild weather
Should be modulating down, not running flat out in October. Usually a compensation curve issue or a controls setting.
Bills higher than you were told to expect
The commonest complaint, and almost always settings rather than a fault. Flow temperature and weather compensation are the first things I look at.
Fault codes appearing and clearing themselves
Intermittent codes are worth noting rather than dismissing. They usually precede a hard fault by weeks or months.
A new noise
Fan and defrost noise is normal. A new whine, rattle or vibration is not — bearings, a loose panel or a perished anti-vibration mount. Cheap early, expensive later.
