What I Check on a Daikin Altherma

The Altherma is a capable system and Daikin's controls are among the better ones — which makes it all the more frustrating how often I find the useful features switched off.

The weather-dependent curve

Altherma's weather compensation is genuinely good when it is set up. I frequently find it disabled entirely, or set so steeply that the system overshoots and cycles. Getting the curve right for the actual property is usually the single biggest running-cost saving available.

Flow temperature versus emitter sizing

A common Altherma complaint is "it will not get the house warm". Often the radiators were never resized for lower flow temperatures, so the installer simply cranked the flow temperature up and efficiency went out of the window. I will tell you honestly which it is.

Room thermostat and setback strategy

Heat pumps do not like being switched off and boosted like a gas boiler. Deep overnight setbacks on an Altherma often cost more than they save, and it is one of the most common owner-side mistakes.

System pressure, expansion vessel and strainer

The unglamorous checks that actually prevent failures. Repeated topping up means an expansion vessel problem, and repeated topping up means sludge, and sludge means a blocked plate heat exchanger.

R32 and monobloc units

Altherma 3 monobloc units are factory-sealed. Routine servicing to the manufacturer’s schedule does not normally involve opening the refrigerant circuit — the work is on the water side, the controls and the electrics, which is where faults genuinely occur.

What Your Heat Pump Is Telling You

Very few heat pumps fail suddenly. They drift, quietly, and the bill is usually the first thing anyone notices.

Fault codes appearing and clearing themselves

Intermittent codes are worth noting rather than dismissing. They usually precede a hard fault by weeks or months.

Short cycling on and off

The unit is producing more heat than the system can absorb — usually flow temperature too high or flow rate restricted. It wears the compressor and wastes electricity.

Ice that does not clear after a defrost

Defrost cycles look alarming the first winter and are normal. Ice that persists afterwards is not, and wants looking at before it causes damage.

Glycol never checked since installation

Not a symptom you will notice until pipework freezes. Worth testing annually on any exposed or rural installation.

Warm radiators but the house never gets there

Often the compensation curve set too shallow, so flow temperature never rises enough on genuinely cold days.

An optimisation visit includes before and after readings in writing. If the numbers do not improve I will tell you that, rather than claiming a saving I cannot evidence.

Most heat pump problems I attend need no parts at all, because they turn out to be settings rather than failures. Where parts are needed I quote a fixed price before ordering.
